Grief During the Holidays

Erica Easton • Dec 28, 2017

Grief can be complicated and can take time to overcome, it doesn’t just stop when the clock hits midnight and a new year has begun. With the holiday season soon coming to an end you may feel yourself becoming overwhelmed with grief. There are simple things that are easy to work into your everyday life to make the grieving process a little easier.

Start by making a list of “tributes” your loved one has left you throughout their lifetime. These can be memories, opportunities they let you have, or even characteristics you see in yourself because of them. After creating your list look for a physical item that can represent each tribute. Below are some ideas that you can incorporate.

  • The memories  your loved one left you could be a photo album of the two of you. This could be one that you already have in your home or you could create a new one that has photos and stories of your most fond memories of your loved one.
  • The opportunities  they let you have could be represented with a thank you card. Write a short note to your loved one thanking them for all they have done for you. You can place the thank you note on your bedside table or tuck it away inside of a drawer.
  • The characteristics  you see in yourself because of them could be represented with a piece of  jewelry  or something that you wear daily to keep them close to you.

Your tributes and symbols don’t need to make sense to anyone other than yourself. Use creativity or simply use the suggestions above. Remember grief is different and individual for everybody.
