Joan E. Kinney

Joan Edla Kinney (née Larson) peacefully passed away and went home to her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on March 20, 2020 in Saint Louis, Missouri at the age of 84. Joan was a beloved daughter, sister, wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, teacher, and friend. Joan is survived by her daughter Amy Jo (Rohn) Shearer of Grand Meadow, Minnesota; son Tony (Sherry) of Saint Louis, Missouri; brothers Alex (Tudi) Larson of Amboy, Minnesota and Alan (Kathy) Larson of Rochester, Minnesota; sisters Julie (Doug) Ritter of Westerville, Ohio and Janet Hanson of Chicago, Illinois; grandchildren Lydia Shearer, MollyBea (Luke) Williams, Jordan, Jesse, Mick (Payge) Shearer, Ema and Lucy Shearer and Jonathan and Matthew Kinney; and great-grandchildren Buirlen and Beulah Williams and Asher Shearer. Joan was preceded in death by her husband, Jerry. They had been married 61 years.

Joan was born on January 18, 1936 in Amboy, Minnesota to Edward and Ida Larson. Joan graduated from Amboy High School in 1953. Joan earned her bachelor’s degree from Mankato State Teachers College and began teaching elementary students when she was nineteen.

On December 26, 1957, she married Jerry Kinney at the First Presbyterian Church in Amboy. Joan and Jerry were later baptized together as adults and were active members of Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Jackson, Minnesota.

After getting married, Joan continued to teach, while Jerry completed his bachelor’s degree from Mankato State College. Once Jerry completed his degree, the couple moved to Jackson, Minnesota, where Joan joyfully taught first grade at Riverside Elementary School until her retirement in 1996 after teaching for forty years. After Jerry passed away in 2019, Joan moved to Saint Louis to live near family, residing in a caring assisted living environment that specialized in memory care.

Joan enjoyed traveling with Jerry and her children throughout the U.S. and later with Jerry on trips to Europe, Israel, and Africa. Joan adored her grandchildren and great-grandchildren and was fond of doting on them. Joan was devoted to and remained close friends with her siblings, regularly visiting them and enjoying endless adventures and laughter together. Joan also delighted in socializing with friends in Jackson and in joining card clubs or getting together for lunch. A Memorial Service in Minnesota will be held at a future date and time when the current social distancing restrictions have been lifted.
