Carlos Gilbert “Sonny” Morrison, 79 years old of Bolivia, NC, passed away March 19, 2020 in St. Louis, MO.
Carlos was born on August 10, 1940 in Huntington, WV to Gilbert and Elah Morrison. He attended Huntington East High School and Greenbrier Military Academy. In high school, he was a highly recognized multi-sport athlete. He earned All-State honors in both basketball and track, but basketball was his true passion. He received a full scholarship to attend and play Varsity basketball for the University of Florida. He graduated from Morehead State University.
He met his loving wife Barbara Morrison in Huntington, WV. They were married in 1969. Shortly after their wedding they moved to Bellwood, IL, a suburb of Chicago. In 2005, after their retirement, they relocated to Winding River in Bolivia, North Carolina.
Following jobs at ACF Industry, FMC corporation and Wilson Sporting Goods, Carlos became an entrepreneur and small business owner. He owned and operated the “Sports Center Lounge” which was known for sponsoring many champion pool teams that Carlos also played on. He and his wife Barbara also owned and operated “BC’s - Just for the Health of It” deli. He was also involved in the Bellwood Moose Lodge serving in a variety of roles including President.
Carlos loved coaching youth sports including local Spartans Pop Warner football teams and multiple levels of little league baseball. He positively impacted the lives of many young athletes. He also served as Assistant Coach for the Triton College Men’s Basketball team in Melrose Park, IL. Beyond organized sports, Carlos simply loved competition. He was outstanding at almost any game he played: pool, ping pong, darts, pop-a-shot, horseshoes, poker, and dominoes.
Later in life, Carlos enjoyed golf, boating, going to the beach, dancing and seeing concerts. He loved Motown and Carolina Beach Music. He especially loved shag dancing with his beautiful wife Barbara. People loved watching them dance.
He was a great storyteller and was known to always have a ready inventory of jokes – although as his friends know, you often got to hear the same joke more than once.
He is survived by his wife Barbara, his son Kevin and wife Sarah, his son Mark, his four grandchildren Natalie, Miles, Mia and Charlie, his sister Connie Albright and her children Gary Lee, Tracey and Christopher Blackwell, and his close cousins and daughters of the late Charles “Peanuts” Thomas - Vickie Thomas Bell, Kim Thomas Ward, Carla Thomas Dille, and Judy Thomas Toney.
