Dorothy A. Huddleston

Dorothy Anne Shutt Huddleston, born 7/15/30, died peacefully on 12/26/21 at her home at Fairwinds Rivers Edge in St. Charles, Missouri. She was 91. She lived for 87 years in Nashville, Tennessee before moving to Missouri in 2017 to be closer to family.

Dorothy attended Hillsboro High School and was crowned Homecoming Queen in 1948. She studied at Vanderbilt University where she met Charles Huddleston, who became a noted Ob/Gyn in Nashville. They were married on June 14, 1952.

She raised four children, then went back to college at MTSU where she earned her teaching certificate and graduated as class valedictorian. She taught First Grade for 16 years, mostly at Hickman Elementary School. She was adored by her students, and when she would run into them as adults, they would tell her she was their favorite teacher. She and her husband were very involved in scouting and led many a Girl and Boy Scout troop. Lots of summers were spent at Camp Boxwell where her husband Charlie, volunteered as the camp doctor. She was an active member of the Donelson-Hermitage YMCA, where she taught an aqua exercise class until her eighties. She attended Donelson Heights United Methodist Church.

She had a strong faith in God and her family and made special connections with everyone she met. She always had a smile on her face and a positive thing to say. She loved butterflies and ice cream.

She is survived by her children: Scott Huddleston of Beaverton, Oregon; Susan Huddleston Hill of Spring Valley, Arizona; Janet Huddleston of Takaka, New Zealand; Gary Huddleston of Wentzville, Missouri; three grandchildren:  Maureen Huddleston and Lisa Huddleston of Florissant, Missouri and Karen Huddleston of San Mateo, California and one great grandchild; Brett.

She was preceded in death by her parents and her brother.

During a visit to her daughter in New Zealand, Dorothy expressed her final wishes to be cremated and her ashes scattered on Waharariki Beach, near her daughter’s home in New Zealand. She will be cremated at Cremation Society of Missouri in Saint Charles, Missouri, and her immediate family plans to hold a family Memorial Service in New Zealand when travel conditions permit.
