James (Jim) F. Mooney, 80, of O’Fallon, MO died Saturday, February 25, 2017 at his home after a battle with cancer. Jim was born in Chicago, IL on June 4, 1936 to Edward F. and Julia C. (Hajostek) who preceded him in death along with his only sister Mary Therese "Tinnie".
Jim was graduated from St. Mary’s College in Winona, Minnesota, in 1958. Upon graduation, he was immediately drafted into the U.S. Army, but decided to join the U.S. Air Force instead because "he liked the uniform!". He served at Holloman Air Force Base Medical Lab in Alamogordo, New Mexico, working with the chimpanzees who paved the way for human space exploration. Jim loved telling the story that "Ham", the first primate in space, bit his thumb! In 1962, after serving almost 4 years, he went to work for McDonnell Douglas Aircraft in St. Louis, MO as an Aerospace Engineer. Jim was sent to Cape Canaveral, Florida for 6 months in 1964, to work on the Mercury Spacecraft Program. While there, he met and married (February 27, 1965) Yvonne A. (Grillion) and they honeymooned back to St. Louis. Jim transferred back to Florida in 1967, and lived in Satellite Beach. He worked on Mercury, Gemini, and Skylab. In 1977, Jim and Yvonne returned to St. Louis and lived in Maryland Heights, Missouri, where he worked on the Tomahawk and Cruise Missile Programs, before taking early retirement in 1992.
He is survived by his wife Yvonne of 52 years, and two sons, Steven J. (Yanina Silva Stauffer) and their two children Alessandra M. Stauffer and Nicholas J. of Richardson, TX and David J. (Michele R. Phegley) and their two children Paige R. and Jack E.of St. Charles, MO.
Jim had a "Million Dollar Smile" that he shared with everyone. He was never satisfied with how various things worked and was always "tweaking" stuff to make it better.
Jim & Yvonne owned various motorhomes over the past 20 years and loved traveling the country. Their favorite state was Utah with its five National Parks. He loved cruising; they took a total of 14 to various ports.
A private interment will be at Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers a donation to St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital would be appreciated.
