Jeremy Phillip Bennetch, age 32 years, passed away in his sleep on December 9, 2019 at his condominium in St. Charles, Missouri. He was born on March 31, 1987 in Richmond, Virginia to James (Jim) Ira and Marilyn Phillips Bennetch.
Jeremy grew up in Glen Allen, Henrico County, Virginia. At a very early age, he set a goal to become an astronaut and the first man to land on Mars. Although he never became an astronaut, he did work as an engineer in the space industry at the time of death.
He loved to visualize and construct original designs using LEGO blocks. Became a body builder for a time. Expert gamer who designed and created unique “worlds” played worldwide on the internet.
He was home schooled for 12 years by his mother, graduating in 2005. While still in high school he took courses in higher mathematics and science at nearby J. Sargent Reynolds Community College in Richmond. After high school he:
- Completed his first two years of college at J. Sargent Reynolds Community College, then transferred to Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) in Richmond, graduating in 2010 with a 4.0/4.0 GPA and awarded a B. S. in Mechanical Engineering.
- Obtained a full scholarship at Georgia Tech in Atlanta, GA, graduating in 2012 with a 3.7/4.0 GPA and earning an M.S. in Aerospace Engineering. Tau Beta Pi and Phi Kappa Phi honor societies. Won the prestigious American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA) Graduate Missile Design Team Competition in 2011.
After graduation from Georgia Tech, he
- Worked at Boeing in St. Louis as a propulsion engineer from 2012 until his death in 2019. He truly became a “rocket scientist.”
Jeremy is survived by his brother and best friend, Nathan John Bennetch and his parents, Marilyn Phillips Bennetch and James (Jim) Ira Bennetch.
Memorial services for family and friends will be held at St. Alban’s Anglican Catholic Church, 4006 Hermitage Road, Richmond, VA 23227 on Saturday, 2 p.m., February 1, 2020.
In lieu of flowers the family requests memorial donations be made to Samaritan’s Purse.
