Brighoff, William Fredrick Jr. “Bill” November 7, 1942 – November 16, 2019. Survived by his loving wife, Carol Bartell, his former spouse, Lois Brighoff, his children, Daniel von Brighoff (the late Cameron Campbell), Becky Immer (Steve), Ben Brighoff (Elisa Arespacochaga), his stepchildren, Andrew Bartell (Caroline), Kerry Tennity (Vince). He was an adoring Ganu and Papa to his nine grandchildren; Andrew, Ethan, Joanna, Ian, Lexi, Paige, Kevin, Owen and James. Dear brother to Kathie Koppenhaver (Bill), Chris Brighoff (Cathy), and Maria Brighoff. He was predeceased by his oldest son Mark Brighoff and sister Teresa Toenjes (Tom).
Born and raised in Maryland, Bill was a man of wide interests and intellectual curiosity which culminated in multiple degrees in science, education, agriculture, and law. A renaissance man, his passions led him to careers and hobbies spanning carpentry, photography, teaching, conservation and ecology. He was a graduate of University of Maryland, Iowa State and Saint Louis University and worked for many years for Saint Louis Public Schools. He was a Papal Volunteer, an Ordained Deacon, a certified Missouri Master Naturalist, a Guardian Ad Litum, and a published author. Bill had a lifelong love of photography with nature and family as his favorite subjects. Bill found a spiritual home with The Ethical Society of Saint Louis where he became an officiant, member of the national board and Head of Buildings and Grounds. He shared his love of nature with the Society by designing a rain garden. Bill is remembered as a smart, witty, caring, fun man with strong opinions.
A celebration of Bill’s life will take place at The Ethical Society of Saint Louis, 9001 Clayton Road 63105 on December 14th at 2:00 pm. A reception will follow. Donations can be made to the Ethical Society of Saint Louis Memory Celebration Garden.
