Cremation and Traditional Burial: How are they different?

At the time of a loved one’s passing families are faced with what can be a tough decision; do they choose cremation or traditional burial for their loved one. This one decision affects how the rest of the funeral arrangements will be made and other in turn. When having to make such a big decision it’s important differences between cremation and traditional burial are known.

When choosing Cremation:

  • You can still have a funeral and burial service. Families who choose cremation can still have a service for their loved one, before or after the cremation has taken place.
  • Cremation is less expensive than traditional burial.
  • Families have more time to decide on a final resting place for their loved one or decide what they would like to do with the cremated remains.
  • An urn can be placed in a burial plot, giving families and friends a place of memorial to gather and visit their loved one

When choosing Traditional Burial:

  • A burial plot offers memorialization where family and friends can gather to visit their loved one.
  • Traditional burial often chosen by default without having knowledge of today’s cremation options.
  • Traditional Burial is more expensive than cremation.
  • The need to also purchase a burial plot is required with a Traditional Burial.
  • Families have less time to plan and make decisions.

Choosing a method of disposition for your loved one can be difficult, but there is no right or wrong choice. There is a great deal of information to consider when making this decision, but how you choose to honor your loved one’s life should special and unique to your family’s wants, needs and means.
